Cable jointers are electrical power line installers who make and repair joins in insulated power supply and control cables. They also prepare cable terminations for electrical equipment, overhead lines, underground pipes, trenches and more. Cable jointers must have a thorough knowledge of the installation process to ensure that they are able to:
– Keep cables from sagging
– Protect them from exposure or damage
– Ensure they don’t overheat
– Prevent the risk of a fire or an electrical shock
– Protect them from rodents and corrosion. Cable jointers also need to know how to replace faulty cables, repair connections on equipment like power boxes, meters and fuse boxes. This might involve soldering joints for better conductivity; using speciality tools such as torch guns, crimpers and cable stretchers; and installing terminal blocks (also called “connector strips”).
They must be able to work with copper wire in any gauge size between 12AWG up to 800MCM (thousand circular mil), insulated PVC spiral wrap or rubber insulation, aluminium tape that has been preformed into various shapes depending on the type of installation they are working on.
